Care & Capacity

Small cups deserve exact numbers. Here is how we measure, and how to keep each piece looking the way it did on its plinth.

How we measure capacity

Every capacity on this site is the brim capacity: the volume of water the cup holds when filled to the very top edge, in millilitres (ml). In practice you will fill a little less. For reference, a single espresso is about 30 ml and a double about 60 ml. US fluid ounces are given next to the millilitres on each exhibit label (1 US fl oz = 29.57 ml).

Materials

  • Porcelain (Pleat, Facet and Column pieces): dense and smooth, glazed inside.
  • Stoneware (Melt pieces): heavier, with a drip glaze that varies slightly from piece to piece.
  • Stainless steel (spoons): brushed, or with a matte black or dark satin finish.
  • Solid oak and walnut (Plinth Stand, Column Tree): oiled.
  • Powder-coated steel (Facet Riser).

Our cups are not insulated: like any ceramic cup, they get warm when filled with hot coffee. Hold them by the handle, the folds or the base.

Care

  • Rinse soon after use so coffee does not dry in the folds and facets.
  • Wash by hand with a soft sponge and mild detergent. We recommend hand-washing for every piece.
  • Do not use in the microwave, oven or on the stove, and avoid sudden temperature changes (for example, a cold cup straight into boiling water).
  • Do not use a chipped or cracked piece.
  • Spoons: wash by hand and dry straight away.
  • Wood: wipe with a damp cloth, dry, and rub in a little food-safe oil now and then. Keep out of water.
